Israel Samuel Ph.D
My Profile
Born in 1968 in a southern city in Tamil Nadu (Madurai), India I had my schooling in R.C. Yadava Middle School, Paramakudi, Nehru Vidhyasalai and American College Higher Secondary School in Madurai between 1973 and 1985. I joined one of the prestigious institution that was famous for great teachers and christian higher education, the one and only, "The American College" during the year 1985 as a BSc student in Physics(special). My Roll number was 85PHY67 and there were about 72 students in my class. Most of our class mates opted out of BSc for Engineering and Medical courses and we were left with 15 students at the end of the course. I joined in NMSSVN College for my Masters in Physics and then to School of Physics, Madurai Kamaraj University for MPhil. My college days at the premises of American College are the most memorable. It also shaped my interest in the subject. School of Physics at MKU gave me the spirit of doing research in Physics and taking it as a career. Stalwarts like Prof. K. Navaneetha Krishnan, Prof. S. Balasubramanian. Prof.(Late). S.K. Mohan Lal, Prof.(Late) R.K. Rajaram and one of the best teacher Prof. V. R. Venugopal are a few who have shaped up my desire to do research.
I met my mentor and my Guide Dr. R. Saravanan at the X-ray lab of School of physics during my Mphil course work. He inspired me with his dedication and the desire to understand new things on materials using X-ray information. I joined in his group as a student for Doctoral degree and worked on semiconductors and ionic solids. My interest was to reconstruct the charge density mapping in the unit cell of the given solid. We have used single crystal X-ray diffraction data for the evaluation of charge density and to analyse it for the bonding features. Finally I received my doctoral degree in the year 2007.
It was indeed a moment of my life when I had a chance to host Prof. Louis Farrugia, the author of WingX and Ortep in our college to give an invited lecture and to interact with him. I cherish the moments I spent with him during the academic session and on the corridors of Meenakshi Amman Temple.
It was again a proud moment in my life to see and interact with stalwarts Prof. Philip Coppens and Prof. Guru Row at an international workshop conducted by IISc, Bangalore.
